Letters: McMaster becoming coward-in-chief

SC Gov Henry McMaster

Commander-in-chief or coward-in-chief? Henry McMaster is choosing his new title during his first few months as governor. Right now he’s ringing in as a cowardly leader by not supporting a gas tax to repair our highways.

Tourism is our top industry, so why not let visitors help pay for our roads through gasoline taxes? Given that our tax is the second-lowest in the nation, I don’t believe tourists will be shocked to see a change of price at the pumps.

It makes more sense for South Carolinians to pay more at the pump rather than pay tax money to settle lawsuits from travelers who have car damage due to potholes and ruts. And this doesn’t even take into account the safety factor.

Gov. McMaster accepted the job to make the hard decisions.

He should stop playing politics and allow the Legislature to do what needs to be done: Fix our roads now by raising gas taxes to the national average.
