Letters: Roads bill reeks of favoritism
The House and Senate bills that raise the $300 sales tax cap on automobiles to pay for road repair show how close legislators are to the automobile dealers.
Most people think about cars, but the cap also applies to trucks, motorhomes, boats, planes and just about anything that moves. Someone who pays $6,000 for a used clunker to get to school or work pays the same as I did for a $100,000 motorhome for recreational purposes. The cap helped me, but it’s just not fair.
So our legislators propose to double the tax, which again only helps the better off. The simple solution, which would require some folks with courage, is to lower the sales tax rate on vehicles and remove the cap. The only people who benefit from the sales tax cap are the better-off and of course the dealers.
This bill reeks of favoritism.
