Letters: Ticketed driver missed the point
In an attempt to deflect responsibility for breaking the law, the man who was ticketed for not wearing his seat belt overlooked some important facts (“S.C. troopers targeting the wrong violators,” April 24).
First, if he starts buckling up on a regular basis, the patrolman may have saved his life since many traffic deaths are the result of unbuckled folks being thrown from their vehicle. Second, I doubt the Highway Patrol sets a higher priority on seat belt violations than passing a stopped school bus; it is just more difficult to be present when a car passes a bus than to spot the many macho drivers who choose not to wear seat belts.
I am proud of the trooper for doing his duty of enforcing the law to try to save this gentleman’s life.
