Letters: Gas tax money would just be squandered

A trail connecting the Vista with the neighborhoods north of Elmwood Avenue was funded with $1.2 million from Richland County’s penny sales tax for transportation.

There is no denying that our roads need to be repaired. We were told we needed to let Richland County charge a penny sales tax to pay for roads, and we did. But the roads are still bad. I have seen signs that say, “Your penny at work,” but the ones I have seen were on beautification projects, not repairs.

Now the Senate has approved a 12-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline. What makes anyone believe that this money will be used any more wisely than the county’s penny tax?
