Letters: Train opponents should get over it
Dick Harpootlian complains that living in Wheeler Hill is “like living in some two-bit, rural, redneck town where the trains wake everybody up all night long” (“Columbia considers becoming a quiet zone,” May 1).
Well, before it was gentrified, Wheeler Hill was where I grew up, and the trains came through morning, noon and night, and we had no relief. It was expected that most black neighborhoods were located near the tracks. So it comes with the territory. I’m sure Mr. Harpootlian knew that when he purchased his property.
Did you think CSX and Norfolk Southern would reroute the tracks because people built million-dollar houses near the tracks? I don’t think so. Get used to it. We did.
