Letters: Why do men get all the glory, and money?
I saw recently that the 11 signs being posted around the state celebrating the Gamecocks’ national basketball championship will remain up for a year. I’m very pleased that the team is being acknowledged in this manner. However, after the men’s baseball team won its national championship in 2010, a sign was erected on the Gervais Street bridge. Another sign was added the night the team won the national title again in 2011 and is still there today.
Why would the women’s victory demand less? Their signs should remain indefinitely, like the men’s signs have. The women may well have more honors added in the future, especially if Dawn Staley remains.
And why is she earning less than Frank Martin? Our girls have been to the big dance before. The guys have made it once.
I’m proud of both teams, but women are not second class. South Carolina is bad about this kind of thinking.
