Letters: Trump dismantling our democracy

NYT

President Trump wishes to change our democratic system into an “authoritative democracy,” to eliminate checks and balances that limit the power of the presidency. He has proved it by attacking specific elements of our checks and balance system: the courts, the filibuster, the media and other things he sees as a hindrance to his authority.

I believe he will continue to be very successful in this endeavor. The Republican Party has tolerated his bad behavior, his incompetence and his moves toward more authority, with little dissent. Republicans have and will continue to put party loyalty over the ideals of democracy and the idea of checks and balances.

We are moving steadily toward being like those countries Trump has publicly admired, such as Russia and Turkey.

Is this what is best for us?
