Letters: What will Columbia come up with next?

Finalists for the new Columbia, SC, flag

Just when I think Columbia can’t get any more absurd with its pathetic plans, pitiful proposals, permissive projects and preposterous quests, it does.

Appalling enough was the State House grounds “Front Porch” idea encouraging “events, seating, and alternate work spaces throughout Capitol grounds” (June 13). The state Administration Department is justified in its liability, security and property-management concerns. I hope Gov. Henry McMaster won’t intervene to allow the capitol grounds to become a three-ring circus, anything-goes space.

South Carolina has campgrounds for picnics, vendors and stores for shopping, Main Street for diversified “re-imagining” events and many festivals.

But the “Help Pick a New Columbia Flag” designs are nauseatingly ugly. They look like they could belong to unfriendly foreign nations. Preschoolers have produced art designs better than these. My flag “redesign” suggestion: a clown face above the crescent moon, smiling down on a donkey rear that’s jumping through three big hoops beneath the Palmetto tree on the State House grounds. Imprinted: “Barnum and Bailey Left Town; Darn’em and Nail’em Are Here.”

Cost of this ridiculous re-imagining-redesigning rampage? Inquiring taxpayer minds want to know.
