Letters: Life used to be so simple

I remember how Momma would put another stack of 45s on the old RCA console and say “Go outside and play until supper’s ready.” Daddy worked in the cotton mill that is now the State Museum and coached baseball in West Columbia. When he got home from work, he would say “Load up, we’re going to the ball field.”

It was a treat to go somewhere like What-A-Burger, Ed’s Drive-Thru or Bell’s Hamburgers. Going to Hite’s in Lexington was like leaving the state, and a trip to Hall’s Drive-In was like going to Disney World. The roaring sounds coming from Columbia Speedway could be heard for miles every weekend. Our TV had only three channels, and we always watched it as a family. The Saturdays spent with granddad fishing or hunting in Lone Star are irreplaceable.

My, how times have changed. Don’t you miss the good ol’ days?
