Letters: How did we get into such a fix?
Until we’re confronted with another horrific assault on our homeland, the greatest threat we face will continue to be what we’re doing to ourselves. You’ve got to wonder how we’ve become so irrationally divided.
As an example, a friend and I share the same general demographic: old white guy, served our country honorably, practicing Christian, comfortably retired and sometimes suspected of having good sense.
But with a straight face, he said recently he is convinced that Donald Trump’s election was ordained by God almighty and his presidency is our nation’s last chance for salvation. I’m just as certain that Donald Trump is Lucifer incarnate and here to drive this democracy off the cliff.
My friend views the world through Limbaugh goggles and watches Fox News around the clock. I watch Fake News most evenings. I guess that could explain part of our slight difference of opinion.
In the meantime, don’t you know that Vladimir Putin and his old KGB buddies squeal with glee when they see another headline describing our self-inflicted tragedy? It wasn’t good enough that we nominated the two most reprehensible characters ever imaginable, but we actually elected Vlad’s favorite. They must be spewing vodka from their noses as they watch us ricochet from one train wreck to the next.
Surely they have to wonder if we’re really this disconnected or if they’re just that lucky. Regrettably, I don’t think their luck has anything to do with it.
