Letters: Motorcycles can be hard to see

Tri-City Herald

I see the signs and hear the words on TV and radio designed to alert automobile drivers to motorcycles: “Look Twice, Save a Life.”

While many things require drivers to stay on alert, the fact is that with motorcycles, sometimes you can’t see what you don’t see.

I have experienced two near-misses, both at dusk, where the motorcycle’s headlights blended with the larger vehicle behind it. The first time, thankfully, the driver seemed to slow back as I pulled out in front. The second time, I caught sight of the bike just before making my turn. Still another close call was when a motorcycle seemed to come from out of nowhere as I began to change lanes, because he was traveling so fast, weaving in and out of traffic.

I think a more fitting campaign would be aimed at motorcyclists: “Ride like they don’t see you” — because they just may not.
