Letters: Critique of SCE&G nuclear project was all opinion
A recent front-page article about the nuclear reactors under construction at V.C. Summer cited an anti-construction report as if it presented established facts, when it was really just opinions based upon assumptions (“Economist predicts spike in power bills if SCE&G nuke project moves ahead,” July 19).
The report’s author is an antinuclear activist who, as the article put it, “conducted the study on the behalf of two environmental groups” — which are known to represent very vocal antinuclear views. This is not objective environmentalism.
Reporter Sammy Fretwell should have done more to review the assumptions of the study, and should not have repeated propaganda such as “renewable energy sources are an increasingly viable way to meet customer demands.”
I worked all my adult life in nuclear power, first on Navy submarines and then in commercial reactor plant and fuel design and manufacturing. And, yes, I would live next to the V.C. Summer nuclear reactors.
