Letters: Fancy new bus features squander taxpayers’ money

Some years ago, there was much ado in Richland County about trying to get the less fortunate to work or to other places. Voters approved a penny sales tax to support the COMET bus system along with improving roads and building walking trails. Have officials overreached the goal of getting bus riders to their destination?

The June 17 article, “New Columbia buses have Wi-Fi, let you pay with an app,” validates many taxpayers’ concerns that funds generated for a particular purpose are sometimes used for other purposes. Purchasing buses that allow riders to charge their phone batteries and offer free Wi-Fi and other supped-up features appears to be an overreach. One rider made the statement “It’s like going to the library.”

The less fortunate should thank those who work or who have worked and pay taxes.
