Letters: Where do Sen Tim Scott’s loyalties really lie?

Sen. Tim Scott frequently reminds us of the importance of his Christian faith. He speaks of holy hints and hunches that inform his decisions. While we admire his faith, we must seek to discover how he employs selective divine intent.

For example, Mr. Scott, with much fanfare, offers recognition programs, certificates of appreciation and lapel pins for veterans. Yet he joins 18 other senators to vote against a bill (that passed) to fund programs for veterans to secure jobs, affordable housing and other benefits.

Similarly, Scott embraces Betsy DeVos for U.S. education secretary, ignoring her inexperience. But he and 15 Senate colleagues voted against Carla Hayden for the top post in the Library of Congress, even with decades of experience, including head of a metropolitan library.

We are entitled to ask Mr. Scott which of his decisions are distinguished by divine direction, holy hints and hunches, and how he makes the determination. A survey of Sen. Scott’s funding sources might reveal that his agenda and decisions are less influenced by vertical contact than horizontal instructions.
