Letters: Chicken plant needs to move, not expand

There has been speculation that the chicken plant on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia was asking for a zoning variance so it could expand its operations. Many of us have been hopeful for years that the plant could be moved to a more unobtrusive location. With growth in the West Vista, the House of Raeford Farms plant has become even more of an eyesore; neighbors consider it an unpleasant odor producer.

We have some delightful restaurants within three blocks of this plant. They specialize in fresh, local food. A chicken plant that close is too fresh and local for my taste. I hope West Columbia City Council can work to improve this situation — certainly not let it grow larger. We need the jobs, just not in this location.
