Don’t sell Santee Cooper

Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort is advocating privatizing Santee Cooper. Before we fall for this, I want all my fellow citizens to Google electrical rates across the country. Compare our rates of cost per kilowatt hour with Connecticut, which is entirely privatized, and other states that are privatized.

Those of us who receive our electricity from Santee Cooper or the electric co-ops it supplies pay some of the lowest rates in the country.

I average about $100 a month in energy bills. If Santee Cooper were privatized, my rates would skyrocket, and I would have no more play money or money for enjoyment. I am happy with Santee Cooper.

If we have graft in Columbia, we need to clean up Columbia — not privatize Santee Cooper. Cleaning up our own government is much easier than tackling a large monopoly that is privately owned.
