SC nuclear plants need to be completed
Abandoning the V.C. Summer nuclear reactors will block development of South Carolina, which is already lagging behind. Having vowed to protect American jobs, the federal government has to step in to enable completion of the reactors.
The nuclear power program will ensure continuance of nuclear research, which is strategically essential for our world leadership. Already we are suffering a knowledge gap, as no nuclear plants have been built for 30 years.
Power from fossil fuels is cheaper, but the enormous cost to the environment and the cost of climate change to developing countries is not being taken into account. On the other hand, the cost of disposal or treatment of spent nuclear fuel is included in nuclear costs.
All eggs should not be kept in the same basket. Nuclear power has to be seen in the light of national nuclear security, especially when rogue nations are moving forward in nuclear capability. Augmenting the base load of South Carolina will catalyze industrial and all-around development.
