Sons of Confederate Veterans aren’t racists
The public is terribly misinformed about the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Applicants who provide documentation of their ancestor’s link to the Confederate cause can become full members, and there are a few equally proud members of color who fill our ranks nationwide. People who cannot trace their lineage back to a Confederate veteran can become an associate member.
The S.C. division has a strict policy against hate groups and will not knowingly admit or retain any member who has direct ties to one or promotes the violet overturn of the U.S. government. Most members have served in the armed forces defending this country, and meetings are open to the public.
Because the Confederate battle flag is extremely colorful and can be seen as a symbol of resistance, some ill-intended people have tried to hijack it for illegitimate purposes. True Sons of Confederate Veterans are just like me: We want nothing more than to honor our ancestors, no matter what picture others may want to paint.
