Friday letters: Christians hardly acting like ISIS
Chandler Vincent’s letter to the editor (“Christians acting like ISIS”) is misguided and outrageous. No Christians in this country — or any other — are bombing churches, beheading hostages or burning to death POWs, as ISIS does. And to somehow equate ISIS’ actions to a reasonable faith-based objection to gay marriage or any other sinful behavior is wrong.
Mr. Vincent is correct in pointing out that “Jesus did not encourage, support or gather rocks for the stone throwers,” in alluding to the New Testament story from John 8 about the woman caught in adultery; Jesus did not condemn the woman, and she was not stoned to death by her accusers, as they were not without sin either. But he conveniently omits the most important part: Jesus did command the woman to “Go and sin no more.”
Should we condemn our gay brothers and sisters? Of course not. We should love them as Jesus loves us. However, objecting to sinful behavior does not equal hate, as Mr. Vincent mistakenly believes. And Christians objecting to sinful behavior is not acting like ISIS.
