SCE&G made me give to politicians I don’t like
Executives of SCE&G and Santee Cooper knew many months in advance that there were serious problems with the two nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer facility, but they continued to collect enormous bonuses and insisted that ratepayers continue to pay ever higher charges for a project that would be abandoned.
Several of these executives also made generous contributions to the campaigns of South Carolina legislators. Gov. Henry McMaster’s election campaign received a substantial amount. This money came indirectly from ratepayers.
Some legislators have announced they are returning these donations, but the governor has said he will not. In essence, after being scammed by the utilities, the ratepayers have now been forced to make political contributions merely by paying their electric bills and allowing the mismanagers of this boondoggle to funnel it to Gov. McMaster’s campaign.
