Monday letters:
I appreciate the recent initiative of leaders of the S.C. House of Representatives around a plan to fix our roads. It should be clear to anyone driving in our state that we need to make significant investment to improve them. And we should not have to give a tax cut to the wealthy in order to do that, as some have proposed.
Why should we have to take away from our children’s education, public safety and other key items to make this improvement? The House plan provides a good balance, while ensuring that drivers pay for the majority of the costs. Yes, we could do a little more, such as removing the sales tax cap on new vehicle purchases, but the House plan represents the fairest plan on the table so far.
