Hold Greenville sheriff to the Trump standard

SC Gov Henry McMaster
SC Gov Henry McMaster jblake@thestate.com

A woman has alleged that Greenville Sheriff Will Lewis sexually her. No charges have been filed, but the governor, who has pledged in his oath of office to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of this State and of the United States,” has called on Lewis to step down (“Governor wants sheriff who had sex with assistant to resign,” Oct. 28)

He said he would fire him today if he had that power. What happened to innocent until proven guiltly?

When candidate Donald Trump faced similar accusations from numerous women, McMaster rushed to support him. He never called for Trump to “step down.” McMaster cites a lack of public confidence in Lewis’ ability to do his job. Public confidence in Trump’s ability to do his job is 38 percent,. Yet, McMaster has not called for Trump to step down.

It seems to me that McMaster’s ethics and moral indignation flow from the dark well of political convenience. Fake ethics. Fake morals. Sexual assaults should not be tolerated.
