Wednesday letters: Hateful rhetoric makes us look bad

Jim White, in his letter of April 5 (“Obama turning America ugly”), claims that the “administration” has caused the world to view Americans as “ugly,” but he targeted the wrong administration. It was the Bush administration that lied to its own citizens and to the world in order to invade Iraq. And it was the Bush administration and its Republican and tea party backers that deliberately divided our nation along economic and racial lines.

As for Mr. White’s claim of “persecution of Jews and Christians,” I fail to see this. Certainly there are radicals who are killing Christians, Jews, Muslims and anyone else in the way of their crazed thinking.

Mr. White’s thinking seems to follow the same track as these maniacs who see all non-Muslims as persecuting Islam.

President Obama is not perfect. However, he inherited two wars, an economy in a mess and a Congress filled with Republicans whose stated primary goal was to make him look as bad as they could by shutting down the government.

Where is the “ugliness” of America that Mr. White refers to? It is in the hateful rhetoric that has sought to make President Obama look bad by making all of America look bad.
