School ‘choice’ bill actually reduces choice

tdominick@thestate.com

HR610 is a bill in the U.S. House also known as the “Choice in Education Act” and advocated by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. It would turn federal education funding into grants to states to provide vouchers to parents to use for public, private or home-schooling

This bill would eventually lead to defunding public education, which will eliminate the “choice” by impoverishing hundreds of public schools nationwide, rendering them unfunctional.

The bill does nothing to change the fact that private schools are not required to give extra assistance to disabled students, whereas public schools are.

Additionally, private schools can reject a student for any reason.

Free, high-quality education is not a privilege; it is a human right.

Fortunately, the bill is stalled. One can only hope it fades out.
