Ratepayers don’t have lobbyists, but we need help

Lobbyists gather between the House and Senate chambers. They don’t all work for utilities, but a lot do.

Ever since SCANA abandoned the nuclear construction project at V.C. Summer, we have been hearing from many legislators promising to stop this from ever happening again. In my opinion, a full and total repeal of the Base Load Review Act is the least they can do for ratepayers.

I realize there is no good answer to fix this mess that SCANA and our legislators brought upon us, but the ones who should be considered first and foremost are the ratepayers. They have been hurt the most and had the least say in this whole mess. They do not have the luxury of lobbyists or special interests groups weighing in on their side, as do SCANA, Dominion, NextEra and the Chamber of Commerce.

To keep ratepayers on the hook for something they will never receive is asking them to bail out SCANA stockholders.

Our lawmakers will tell you what you want to hear. Let’s make sure their actions match their words. We deserve better.
