SC alimony law favors ex-spouses ‘who refuse to work’

tglantz@thestate.com

It is unreal that one person should have to pay another person until death simply because their marriage failed. There are so many people who will never be able to retire due to permanent alimony.

There are women, as well as men, who are locked into these permanent payments for the rest of their lives. If you fail to pay for any reason, including disability, losing your job or even just growing to old to work, you can go to jail. Many able-bodied people refuse to find work because they receive enough alimony to virtually retire. Meanwhile, those who are paying have to work more than one job to support the other person who refuses to find work.

Some payees get not only alimony but also part of their ex-spouses’ retirement and then collect their ex-spouses’ Social Security. Many payees have college degrees. It is time to end this unfair law.

The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
