Thursday letters: Critics gearing up to attack Clinton
Looks like Cal Thomas and the right-wing spin machine are already hard at work to derail the Hillary Express. While I’m not on board the train, at least not now, I detest the kind of literary mayhem of Thomas and his cohorts. I encourage readers of his latest drivel (“The ‘new’ Hillary,” April 14) to spend a few minutes checking out Jerry Zeifman — author of the book, Hillary’s Pursuit of Power — from a variety of sources, starting with Snopes, to get a preview of what’s in store for the coming campaign.
Reading Thomas always harkens me back to the words of Joseph Welch, head counsel for the U.S. Army during the infamous McCarthy hearings, when the senator from Wisconsin was attempting to assassinate the character of one of the junior attorneys at Welch’s law firm: “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
Just as Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee left an ugly stain on the period, so have others who have used the big lie in pursuit of their political agendas. Get ready, here they come again.
