Friday letters: What’s wrong with our government?
An April 10 article in The State (“Some rich cheats aren’t pursued”) asserts that the IRS does not pursue delinquent taxpayers in Texas unless they are in arrears for $1 million or more. Officials estimate that $2 billion will go uncollected this year because of a shortage of IRS employees. Most will agree this idiosyncratic situation is another example of poor federal government structure.
I am a 1960s-era, honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected injury whereby the VA has determined I am not worthy of monetary compensation. This is not meant to be my pity party, however, I also have acute congestive heart failure, cannot work and am retired on a meager Social Security check. Medicare is diligently pursuing an erroneous $578 bill from me as a result of medical treatment it claims is not paid by Medicare. Officials refuse to apply facts. Therefore, when they legally attach my $900 monthly check, I can join my homeless veteran brothers. Born in the USA.
