Wednesday letters: Haley uses Jesus in opportunistic ways

Two recent articles have highlighted the true nature of our own Gov. Nikki Haley.

The Atlantic reported last month that at a recent forum sponsored by the Koch brothers, Gov. Haley and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal angrily confronted Republican Gov. John Kasich about the fact that he accepted the Medicaid expansion for the state of Ohio. Kasich has cited his personal faith as a reason to accept the Medicaid expansion; Haley and Jindal accused him of “hiding behind Jesus” to justify his defiance of standing orders from the Koch brothers to oppose the Affordable Care Act and the Medicaid expansion at all costs.

The second article reveals that Haley will appear as an honored guest and deliver the welcoming remarks at “The Response South Carolina,’’ a high-profile prayer event scheduled at the North Charleston Coliseum in June. Jindal appeared at a similar event in Louisiana in January.

Which of these two things did Jesus command? 1) Engage in showboat Christianity with a glitzy public extravaganza trumpeting personal faith for political advantage or 2) Help the poor?

Who’s “hiding behind Jesus” now?
