Sunday letters: Zoning change would hurt Columbia’s Vista
As a resident of the Vista, I find most of the current and proposed development exciting. However, I am becoming increasingly concerned as developers routinely manage to skirt height guidelines.
The most recent proposal is a request to remove all height restrictions at the corner of Park and Lady streets. A large, sky’s-the-limit structure at this location would be grossly incongruous. This plot is surrounded by older, one- and two-story buildings, with two sides of the parcel adjacent to the West Gervais Historic District.
The height of neighboring properties must be a consideration in all decisions if the character and integrity of the Vista is to be preserved. Look to Charleston’s historic district, for example. The city has adhered strictly to guidelines designed to retain the historic nature of the area, and it flourishes largely for this reason.
Although the Planning Commission voiced opposition at its April 6 meeting, City Council will take up the rezoning request at a hearing on Tuesday. I hope it will temper blind ambition for new development with the foresight to preserve the historic integrity of the Vista. If not, the district’s distinctive character will continue to erode.
