US knows election meddling when we see it; we’ve done it enough ourselves

Since 1950, the United States has interfered or attempted to influence national elections in Cuba, Chile, Nicaragua, Haiti, Dominican Republic, South Korea, South Vietnam, Panama, Pakistan, Georgia, Philippines, Iran, Iraq, Syria and the Ukraine, deposing the president who was a Putin favorite.

We sponsored an invasion of Cuba, and we invaded Panama and the Dominican Republic. Some of the deposed leaders were killed: Salvador Allende in Chile and Ngo DinhDiem in South Vietnam.

So are we surprised that Russia tried to influence our elections?

I did not vote for Donald Trump. But there is not one iota of evidence that these attempts changed a single vote or that the Trump campaign staff colluded with Russian attempts. Yet the Democrats beat this horse to death trying to de-legitimize his election. What hypocrites we have become.

In the days of kings and queens, efforts to influence were done by marrying off a daughter or son to the royal family of the country you were attempting to influence.

The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
