We have to reclaim our democracy from politicians

The Capitol is seen at sunup, Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, as Senate Republicans are poised to use their majority to confirm President Donald Trump’s controversial nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, despite calls from Democrats for a delay as both houses of Congress prepare to leave Washington for the President’s Day weekend and return to their home districts. The Senate remains tied up with delays in confirming Trump’s cabinet picks, while the House is spending most of its time reversing regulations from the close of President Obama’s president’s term, including the GOP’s promised swift repeal of Obamacare. We’re in an unusual state right now. Our Republican representatives are supporting a bully, and our Democrats are acting like cowards. Our Republicans will support almost anything that is done by the president, but our Democratic representatives shows each other little or no support. Also, our Democrats are just seeking votes: They are not seen in the community, and if I try to call my congressman, I will not get a response, and even if I do get a response, I am hurried off of the phone as if I’m not important.

The poor and middle class are getting poorer, and this epidemic doesn’t seem to be ending soon, because our politicians seem to be in their positions only for the money and the kickbacks. When will our elected officials start caring about the people they represent? When will they stop using rhetoric aimed at the least intelligent to push an agenda that only benefits them?

America brags about freedom and democracy, but unfortunately, it seems that our freedom and democracy are slowly fading away. It is time for Americans to stand up against the atrocities that are taking place . If we don’t take a stand, our democracy will soon be a thing of the past.

The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
