Alex Sanders was the real father of Congaree National Park

I read with much interest your article regarding the late Ted Snyder’s efforts to preserve the Congaree National Park (“SC lawyer who helped save Congaree swamp remembered as ‘John Muir of the Southeast’”).

While his effort was much appreciated, I believe that it is only proper to note that former state senator and judge Alex Sanders contributed considerably to the project and should be dully recognized for such.

It was Judge Sanders who in his vivid imagination heard the Ivory-billed woodpecker’s call from the swap, which inspired action in the S.C. Legislature.

The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
