The cultural progressions of Gov. Nikki Haley and U.S. Sen. Tim Scott have not been appropriately addressed by our state and nation.

Haley being the first visibly minority governor of South Carolina is tremendous alone, and happening to be female is a great advancement for our society. Scott being the first black person to serve in both chambers of Congress is an amazing attestation to the American dream. Both have ancestries that have been subjected to prejudice the world over.

Erecting statues at our state and federal capitols for these stand-up statesmen will emit a signal to what we can be in the future. I would ask that the General Assembly and the Congress work together to figure out how we can honor their accomplishments correctly in due time.
