Tuesday letters: Equip police with BMW scooters

BMW is our very own home-grown vehicle. Yes, we will soon obtain the Mercedes large van plant and Volvo too, but for the moment, BMW is it. My question: Has Columbia’s police department considered BMW police scooters? And, for that matter, the boards at our colleges and universities should also take a hard look.

The scooters are, of course, modified for law enforcement with large windscreens, public address systems, lights, sirens and the like. And best of all, they are all electric, without emissions or fuel cost. And they allow police to slip up on situations without any noise. Barcelona, known as the European capital for two-wheel police mobility, has just added a fleet.

Consideration should be given to patrolling Five Points, the Vista and Main Street with these scooters. In brief, increase police protection with less cost and less negative effect on our environment.
