Tuesday letters: Avoiding Gamecock spur had added bonus
Removing the spur from the Gamecock logo is a great idea. To me the spur encourages cock fighting, which is illegal in South Carolina, so I totally agree with P. Gregg Brown’s May 3 letter (”Drop the spur from Gamecock mascot”). That’s why I shopped carefully when buying a USC shirt to wear to the women’s game in Connecticut, looking for something that didn’t have the logo.
What I found was a white shirt with red letters that said simply CAROLINA. That turned out to be a great choice because later on the shirt was available for the regional game in Greensboro. Wearing a shirt with the word Carolina in red, not blue, to that game made it even more fun when our Gamecocks came out a winner.
If anyone doesn’t understand what that meant for a lifelong S.C. resident (especially since the game was part of a 6-1 record against the ACC for the year), there’s no way to explain it.
