Sunday letters: Hollings deserves credit for Volvo, other recruits

Congratulations are in order to Gov. Nikki Haley, our outstanding Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt and other state and local leaders for attracting Volvo to South Carolina. But we should thank former Gov. and Sen. Fritz Hollings for creating the foundation that led to this announcement.

Many people have forgotten and most people do not know that it was Gov. Hollings who created the technical education system, began the modernization of the Port of Charleston, created ETV, achieved the AAA bond rating, began the aggressive recruitment of new industries and much more. If the technical college system did not exist, neither Boeing nor Volvo would be here. More than anyone, he created modern South Carolina, and he did all of this in four years and before he was 42.
