Monday letters: Charleston church massacre: Stop ignoring role of guns

Less than 24 hours after a deadly shooting of nine people by a 21-year-old at a church in Charleston, state Rep. Todd Rutherford, who supports liberal gun laws, stated that he would like to ask the suspect why.

In an earlier press conference, Gov. Nikki Haley suggested prayer and healing but made no mention of a gun that was the gift to a young person.

In contrast, the president of the United States stated that political discord is part of our gun violence problem.

How many people must die in the United States as victims of people who should not have guns?

It is ironic that in a country where we are proud that the laws are by the people and for the people, its people are OK with the ongoing slaughter that is taking place because of the way that so many of them wish to interpret the Second Amendment.

Is Gov. Haley still proud of her gift Beretta? Does presidential candidate Lindsey Graham still think it appropriate that he as a citizen own an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle that was conceived for military purposes and not civilian ownership?

When will we agree to better gun laws and enforcement in the United States?
