Wednesday letters: Retire Confederate battle flag with dignity
After 150 years, it is time to retire the Confederate battle flag to the State Museum. We recently have seen vandalism of a Confederate monument in Charleston. Such monuments have been present throughout our state for decades, almost without incident.
The flag on State House grounds is a source of much more angst, and may lead to more similar vandalism. A dignified casing of the colors is preferable to ongoing conflict.
In the interest of modernity and racial harmony, can’t we retire the battle flag? A sincere gesture in memory of the Mother Emanuel nine would go a long way. South Carolina can finally make national news in a positive way.
