Monday letters: Remove the hurt; remove the Confederate flag
It is time to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds. Anything that can add to the hatred in some twisted minds should be removed.
I have great respect for my forefathers and yours who fought in the Civil War and will continue to remember them as having fought a good fight in defense of what they believed to be a good cause. That fight was well-fought, and we lost, so now let’s once and for all remove this symbol that is hurtful to so many of our citizens.
The flag was not displayed on the State House grounds for 100 years after the war began. It was put up with the intent of it remaining for one year only but for some reason was not removed, and is now a hurtful reminder for many of our citizens of a very sad time in our state’s history.
We have a wonderful museum in Columbia, and this seems to be the proper place for the flag. I have no doubt but that my ancestors and yours would not want to see the flag left where it is if it is hurtful to any. We have been given an opportunity to do what’s right and remove it; let’s quit fighting and act on it.
