Monday letters: More should have supported Beasley on flag

More than 15 years late.

Where were all of you Johhnys and Janes come lately when our former Gov. David Beasley called for the Legislature to take that flag off the State House dome? It took a tragedy to get some to act like they want to do right.

Democrats and Republicans alike have said it’s all about heritage. Well, heritage nearly always involves a family album or museum or other remembrance. Not a flagpole in front of our capitol building.

It may be too early to mention, but one more object must be taken from the capitol grounds: the Ben Tillman statue. Tillman was a terrorist in his day and advocated killing blacks in his speeches. Now that’s hate speech.

Beasley would be a good choice for governor again. He served only one term because of his stand on the Confederate flag. You might say he as the last casualty of the Civil War.
