Monday letters: Justice, righteousness demand removal of Confederate flag

The massacre in a house of worship, where innocent citizens were the victims of the rage of a disturbed soul, should make all citizens of South Carolina and beyond cry out “enough” to violence, guns and the elements in our social order that foster anti-social behavior.

Many factors shape the mind and soul of the community. Governments play a major role in shaping the culture, and they can be a positive influence in shaping a society that promotes justice, mercy and the worth and dignity of human life.

The State’s June 23 headline had it right: “The time has come.” It is time for the Confederate battle flag to be removed from its present position and placed in the State Museum. It is not in keeping with the purposes of justice and righteousness to keep that symbol flying on the grounds of our state government.

As the lawmakers come together, may they keep in the forefront of their corporate minds the words of the prophet Micah, “He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
