Friday letters: Columbia gun ban a danger to freedom

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook and the City Council buy into some internet bravado claiming outside agitators are coming into Columbia, and their solution is to disarm local, legally armed citizens? Really?

If this ill-advised, knee-jerk reaction is not challenged and allowed to stand, what would keep Holbrook and company from permanently banning firearms throughout the city? This is a dangerous precedent that must not be allowed to stand. We already have enough laws to enable law enforcement to contain troublemakers and press charges against anyone illegally carrying weapons onto State House grounds or in public.

I encourage everyone who believes in the Second Amendment to contact Mayor Steve Benjamin, City Council, the city attorney, your state representative and the attorney general and voice your opposition. In my reading, S.C. 23-31-510 specifically prevents what the city is attempting to do.
