Sunday letters: ‘Big Red’ worse than other Confederate flags
The Citadel’s Board of Visitors is either hypocritical or blissfully ignorant. Obviously spurred by public opinion about the Confederate flag, the board voted 9-3 to seek legislative permission to remove the Confederate Naval Jack that hangs in the cadet chapel.
However, officials overlooked the glaring absurdity that they continue to endorse “Big Red,” which was flown when Citadel cadets fired on a Union supply ship to start the Civil War. This flag is red with a white palmetto and inverted moon, much like the S.C. banner, and it flies every day on the Citadel parade field and once a week during evening parades.
As an alumnus of The Citadel, I think the board should vote to remove all Confederate flags from places of prominence on campus. Morals do not exist in shades of Confederate gray. If one Confederate flag is wrong, then they all are wrong.
