Monday letters: Confederate flag just one part of ‘cleansing campaign’

Whether you are a Republican or Democrat, you get angry when your ancestors are attacked. Some of it would be silly, like attacking the Dukes of Hazard comedy TV show or Gone with the Wind, if it was not a serious part of the cleansing campaign. There are efforts to change the name of Tillman Hall at Clemson.

The issue is not only the flag. This is about whitewashing national history (our nation was at war, not the South). We have seen the torrent of attacks on history, the flag and the Confederate monuments, brought on by our state leaders. The governor may have helped divide and conquer the Republican Party in South Carolina. If you are a Democrat, I know you are laughing, and rightly so.

No fair-minded person believes the Legislature should have voted several days after the last funeral of those killed in Charleston.
