Wednesday letters: Use common sense to protect yourself on water, city streets

My reaction to the latest call for laws to protect people from fatal accidents on the water is the same I have when I hear someone being a victim of violence on city streets after dark: It’s not a good idea to be out there after dark in either case.

Yes, it is very sad that we can’t enjoy such freedoms as we did when I was young. I used to boat on the lake at night, but now I now realize it’s just too dangerous. I feel for the victims in every accident, but there is no amount of legislation that will stop people from doing dangerous things on the lake or committing crimes on the street, period. Laws only work for those who obey them. The only way to protect ourselves is to use common sense and not put ourselves in harm’s way.
