Thursday letters: Latest pro-life positions are crazy
I’m impressed that the number of abortions in South Carolina has declined, but I wonder how many births have occurred because women seeking abortions have had so many roadblocks thrown in their way by the Legislature.
I am pro-choice to the core, and I try very hard to see the pro-life point of view. But sadly, once in a while members of pro-life groups descend into self-righteous insanity. State Sen. Lee Bright, R-Spartanburg, is one such person. He opposed a pro-life bill this year because it had exceptions for victims of rape or incest.
He’s just one more man who feels he has the right to tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her own body. I can’t help wondering if Sen. Bright would feel the same way if he had a daughter who became pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Or would he accuse his daughter of lying to cover up an illicit sexual relationship?
Just as troubling is a group of anesthesiologists who will not participate in a pregnancy termination even in a medical emergency such as an ectopic pregnancy, if there is a heartbeat present. It would seem to me that with the death of the fetus almost certain and a strong likelihood that the mother will bleed to death, self-righteous piety should be thrown out the window.
I’m glad to meet anyone half way to discuss these issues, but this craziness is not half way.
