Monday letters: Enough with flag, massacre; move on
Yet another column about the Confederate flag from Cindi Scoppe, who pretends to be the end all of knowledge about all things. The spark that ignited all of this recent rhetoric is a mentally deranged person who reportedly lacked parental guidance, education and direction. It truly is time to move on and stop the divisiveness that is fueled by all of the supposed fonts of moral correctness.
Let me tell you about another tragedy that happened without all of the outcry we have recently witnessed.
One night in February 1951, four young men were joy riding and enjoying themselves. An assassin happened upon them as they were parked in their car. Words were reportedly exchanged, and then the assassin shot and killed three of the young men.
The perpetrator went home and went to bed, where law enforcement officers found and arrested him early in the morning. The perpetrator was tried, convicted and executed. The crime occurred in Beaufort — about as Southern a town as I can image. I recall no great public outrage over the murder of these innocent victims.
By the way, the victims were white, and the murderer was black.
I was 7 years old at the time, and the victims were relatives. The family and the community moved on; so should The State and the nation.
