Letters: Haley acted on Confederate flag for her own benefit

Now that Gov. Nikki Haley and the Legislature have removed what they consider a symbol of hatred, they have declared it a new day for South Carolina. It is too bad that this symbol was what brought them together instead of addressing systemic problems in our state to include gang violence, poor education and poor roads.

It’s amazing that the majority of the Republican legislators folded like cheap suits in the face of political correctness. But apparently, it’s all about perception and feelings.

A more appropriate flag to honor our Confederate ancestors on the State House grounds would have been the First Confederate National flag, the S.C. sovereignty flag or the Bonnie Blue. Instead, our leaders chose a flag that has been co-opted by supremacist organizations and therefore became more divisive as time passed.

Removing divisive symbols will never change the minds of psychopaths. Now the shining star of the state, Gov. Haley will have her choice of federal appointments. She’s the real winner in this tragedy.
