Letters: U.S. treated Native Americans appallingly

AP

Thanks to Larry E. Turner for his July 20 letter, “Think about Native Americans.”

The history of the barbaric treatment and near extermination of an entire race of human beings under the flag of the United States is nothing less than obscene. Entire tribes of Native Americans were eradicated, and the population that was left represented only a small fraction of what it had been — all with the blessing and help of the U.S. government.

Talk about a flag that represents hate: The Stars and Stripes has got to be at or near the top. I fly our flag too, because it’s what we’ve got. But I believe that a new banner could very well be fitting.
